Local SEO

It is also the area where you are most likely to have been sold something that does not work. Bulk citation packages, review-gating schemes, dozens of near-identical town pages. We will explain why those fail, and what actually moves the needle.

A full Google Business Profile review against the competitors ranking above you · Primary and secondary category selection, services, products and a description that reads like a business · Opening hours, special hours, attributes, messaging and Q&A seeded with real customer questions · Citation audit, cleanup of incorrect listings, and building on directories that are actually used

Why does local search work differently to everything else?

Because ordinary search ranks pages and local search ranks businesses, using three factors that behave very differently from one another. Two of them you can influence directly. The third is distance from the searcher, and it quietly sets the ceiling on what the other two can achieve.

FactorWhat it isHow much you control it
RelevanceHow well your business matches what was searched — categories, services, description, website content, the questions your pages answer. The one you control most directly.
ProminenceHow well known and well regarded you are: reviews, citations across the web, mentions, links, and your ordinary organic authority.Slow to build, and the thing most competitors have not bothered with.
DistanceHow far you are from the person searching, or from the place they named.Nobody can buy their way around it, and every local SEO pitch quietly avoids saying so.

What does distance mean for your strategy?

It means the honest work is to win everything relevance and prominence decide, target the geography where distance is on your side, and be realistic about the rest. Nobody can buy their way closer to a searcher, so the strategy is about choosing the ground, not about trying harder on ground you cannot win.

If your competitor is in the city centre and you are eight miles out, you will find it harder to appear for a city-centre searcher — regardless of how good your SEO is. That is not a failure of effort. It is how the system is designed, and it is designed that way because it is usually what the searcher wants.

Where proximity is against you, the answer is usually not more local SEO. It is either a different geography, or organic and paid work on the searches that are not distance-weighted at all — which is why a local engagement often sits alongside a broader organic search programme.

The point

Where proximity is against you, the answer is usually not more local SEO.

What actually moves you into the local map pack?

Six things, and only some of them are yours to change. Proximity to the searcher sets the ceiling; your primary category, your reviews, the completeness of your profile, the consistency of your listings and the website behind them decide where you land underneath it. The last column is the useful one.

FactorWhat it meansWhat you can change this month
ProximityHow close you are to the person searching, or to the place they named. It sets the ceiling on which searches you can appear for at all.Nothing directly. What you can change is which geography you target, and whether you are competing for searches where distance is not already against you.
Primary categoryThe strongest relevance signal on the profile. One primary category, with secondaries doing the rest of the work.Look at what the profiles ranking above you use as their primary, and check that yours describes what you actually sell most of.
ReviewsVolume, recency and whether you reply all feed prominence — and they decide the click far more than the position does.Ask every customer at the moment a job goes well, and reply to everything including the bad ones. No gating, ever. The review block does as much work as anything else that persuades someone to enquire.
The profile itselfPhotographs, services, products, attributes, opening hours, special hours and Q&A. Completeness is a ranking input and a conversion one.Fill in every field, add real photographs rather than stock, set your special hours before the next bank holiday, and seed the Q&A with the questions customers actually ask.
Citations and NAP consistencyYour name, address and phone number, identical everywhere it appears. Inconsistency makes you a less certain match.Correct the wrong old listings before adding new ones — that is usually where the gain is. It is also what gets you described the same way wherever a model looks.
The website behind itThe profile does not stand alone. Your own site's local relevance, its LocalBusiness schema and its ordinary authority all feed the profile's prominence.Point the profile at the relevant page rather than the homepage, and make sure that page is something a crawler can read and a phone can load quickly.

What will we tell you that other agencies will not?

Five things that are true, unpopular to say in a pitch, and cheaper to hear now than to discover in month nine: proximity limits what you can win, bulk citations do almost nothing, review gating breaks the rules, a wide service area mostly dilutes, and some city markets are close to unwinnable.

  • Proximity limits what you can achieve. If a term is not realistically winnable from your address, we will say so at the start rather than billing you for twelve months of trying.
  • Bulk citation packages are mostly worthless. A few hundred listings on directories nobody uses does very little. Twenty correct, consistent listings on directories that matter does more. If someone is selling you 500 citations, ask which ones.
  • Review gating breaks the rules. Asking only happy customers, or filtering people to a private form before letting them through to Google, is against Google's policies and puts your profile at risk. We will help you get more reviews by asking everyone, at a better moment, more consistently.
  • Service area businesses are different. If you do not have a walk-in location, hiding your address and setting a wide service area is standard practice — but a very wide service area does not make you rank across all of it. It mostly dilutes.
  • Some sectors are close to unwinnable in a saturated city. Certain trades in central Birmingham, for example, are contested by dozens of established profiles with hundreds of reviews each. There is still work worth doing, but the honest answer may be that your budget goes further elsewhere. In those markets the comparison worth running is whether paid search buys the visibility faster.

Where do we draw the line on location pages?

At the point where a page could have its town name swapped for another town and still make sense. If that is true of the page, we do not publish it. The tempting strategy is to generate a page for every town within fifty miles, and some large agencies do exactly this — one runs roughly 1,575 location URLs across dozens of services and cities, all sharing a single bulk timestamp.

We do not, for two reasons. It puts the whole domain at risk: pages that exist only to capture a place name, with no unique substance, are what search engines call doorway pages, they are explicitly against guidelines, and the penalty applies to the site rather than just the pages. And it does not work as well as doing it properly — a handful of genuinely local pages, with real local knowledge on them, outperform hundreds of templated ones.

A page earns its place when it contains things that could only be written about that place: named local clients or projects, the business districts and trading estates actually served, local market context, practical logistics, and real photographs. For our own business, that means a page for Oldbury, where we are based, and one for the West Midlands. Not one for every town in the Midlands.

It is worth saying that thin, duplicated location pages are also a technical liability, not only a policy one. Templated near-duplicates are exactly the pattern a crawl and indexation review tends to surface first on a site that has stopped growing.

The point

Templated near-duplicates are exactly the pattern a crawl and indexation review tends to surface first on a site that has stopped growing.

Which areas do we serve?

We are based in Oldbury, in Sandwell, and work across the six Sandwell towns — Oldbury, Rowley Regis, Smethwick, Tipton, Wednesbury and West Bromwich — plus Halesowen, Quinton, Dudley, Walsall, Wolverhampton and Birmingham. We also take on clients elsewhere in the UK, because the work is research and configuration rather than something that requires us to be nearby.

Being local to the Black Country means we can turn up — a meeting, a look at the premises, a conversation about which trading estates and high streets actually send you work. For a client further away the work is identical, and it helps to tell us where your customers actually travel from at the start.

The point

We also take on clients elsewhere in the UK, because the work is research and configuration rather than something that requires us to be nearby.

How We Work

01

Profile and competitor review

We look at your profile against the two or three competitors ranking above you and identify what is different — categories, reviews, completeness, citations, website support.

02

Geography assessment

Which searches are realistically winnable from your address, and which are decided by proximity you cannot change. You get this before the work starts, not after six months of it.

03

Profile optimisation

Primary category chosen carefully with secondaries doing the rest of the work, complete services and products, a human description, real photographs, hours, attributes, messaging, posts and seeded Q&A.

04

Citations and consistency

Name, address and phone number made identical across Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, the directories that matter, your chamber, and your own site and its schema. Incorrect old listings are corrected first.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Google map pack and how do I get into it?

The map pack is the block of three local businesses with a map that appears above the ordinary results for searches with local intent. Getting in depends on relevance, prominence and distance. Practically: a complete Google Business Profile, consistent details across the web, genuine reviews, and a website that supports the profile.

How long does local SEO take to show results?

Faster than ordinary SEO. Google Business Profile improvements can show within two to four weeks. Citation and review work typically shows over two to three months. Competitive map pack positions take longer, and in saturated city-centre markets may take six months or more. In thin markets — many Black Country towns qualify — movement can be quick.

Do reviews affect my rankings?

Yes, and they affect conversion more. Volume, recency, rating and whether you respond all feed into prominence. But the bigger effect is on the person choosing between three profiles: a business with 40 recent reviews and thoughtful replies wins against one with 6 from three years ago, even at the same position.

What is a citation and how many do I need?

A citation is any mention of your business name, address and phone number on another website — a directory, a chamber listing, a trade body. There is no magic number. Twenty accurate, consistent citations on directories people actually use beats 500 on ones they do not. Fixing wrong old listings usually matters more than adding new ones.

How much does local SEO cost?

It depends on how many locations are involved, how contested your geography is, how much cleanup your existing listings need, and whether local content and local link building are in scope. There is also a one-off setup if you would rather run the profile yourself afterwards, genuinely offered, not a bait for the retainer. We scope it on a call.

Which areas of the West Midlands do you cover?

All six Sandwell towns — Oldbury, Rowley Regis, Smethwick, Tipton, Wednesbury and West Bromwich — plus Halesowen, Quinton, Dudley, Walsall, Wolverhampton and Birmingham. We also work with clients across the rest of the UK, because the research and configuration involved does not require us to be nearby.

Can I rank in Birmingham if my business is in Oldbury?

Partly. For searches that name Birmingham explicitly, and for searchers on the Birmingham side of the city, you have a genuine chance. For someone standing in the city centre searching without naming a place, proximity works against you. We would generally have an Oldbury business dominate Sandwell first and treat Birmingham as expansion.

What results can a local business realistically expect?

More profile views, more calls and direction requests, and better map pack positions for the terms where your geography is competitive. We report on Google Business Profile actions specifically, because they are the closest measure to real intent — someone requesting directions is not browsing.

Do I need a local SEO agency in my own town?

No. The work is research, configuration, content and consistency, none of which requires physical proximity. What being local genuinely gives you is the ability to meet, and a supplier who already knows your market. For a Sandwell business we can offer both. For a business in Aberdeen we can offer the work but not the coffee.
