The Black Country
The Black Country is four boroughs with four different local searches, and a page that swaps the town name is no use to any of them. So this one does not. Each of Dudley, Walsall, Wolverhampton and West Bromwich gets its own section, written around what is true of that place and no other.
What is included
- A review of your Google Business Profile and listings against your real address and postcode
- A technical check of the site: crawl, indexation, structured data and speed
- A written plan that says which towns and districts deserve a page and which do not
- Content and page changes for the places you genuinely serve
- Enquiry tracking so you can see what the work produced
On this page
- What is the Black Country, and where does it start and end?
- What does a search for a Black Country business actually look like?
- Which part of Dudley borough are you trying to be found in?
- What does a Walsall business have to be found for?
- What changes when the customer is in Wolverhampton?
- What is different about West Bromwich?
- Where do the town, the council and the postcode disagree?

What is the Black Country, and where does it start and end?
The Black Country is a region of the West Midlands, separate from Birmingham, usually taken to mean the four metropolitan boroughs of Dudley, Sandwell, Walsall and the City of Wolverhampton. It has no official boundary and no council of its own, so “Black Country” describes an identity more than an administrative area, and even locals disagree about its edges.
The name is usually traced to the soot and smoke of coal, coke, iron, glass, brick and steel production, and to a coal seam about thirty feet thick, the thickest in Great Britain, that reached close to the surface here. Each town specialised. Chain-making survives at Cradley Heath, glass-making grew up around Stourbridge, Willenhall became known for locks, and Walsall for saddlery and leather. Heavy industry then declined sharply from the late 1970s, and much of the land that heavy industry left now holds trading estates, retail parks and business parks.
That history matters to a marketer for a plain reason. These were separate manufacturing towns rather than suburbs of one city, and they still behave that way: people say they are from Dudley or Walsall, not the Black Country, and councils, postcodes and high streets differ town by town. Birmingham is not part of the region, and has its own page at our Birmingham area page; the wider region around both is covered on the West Midlands page. The four sections below take one town each.
The point
Birmingham is not part of the region, and has its own page at our Birmingham area page; the wider region around both is covered on the West Midlands page.
What does a search for a Black Country business actually look like?
It is rarely a search for “the Black Country”. Google has said that local results depend on relevance, distance and prominence, and none of those is a regional label. A business here is found through its listing, its address and the town or postcode the searcher is standing in.
The regional phrase matters mainly to the buyer choosing a supplier: someone typing “seo agency black country” or “digital marketing agency black country” is most likely a business owner building a shortlist, and this page is written for that reader.
So the practical work is town-level: a verified listing, an address that is the same everywhere it appears, pages that say which districts or estates you serve and why, and reviews from real customers. Our local SEO service is built around exactly that, and the wider SEO service deals with the site itself. Where one business serves several towns, we recommend a page for a town only when there is something true and specific to put on it, which is why this page has four sections and the Black Country does not have four near-identical landing pages.
The point
Our local SEO service is built around exactly that, and the wider SEO service deals with the site itself.
Which part of Dudley borough are you trying to be found in?
Dudley is both a town and a metropolitan borough, and the borough's commercial weight is not in the town centre. Dudley Metropolitan Borough Council also covers Halesowen and Stourbridge, and the borough's business and innovation enterprise zone is at Brierley Hill, beside Merry Hill. So “seo agency dudley” could mean any of several places.
Which one it means changes the whole plan, and the history explains why. Merry Hill shopping centre was built between 1985 and 1990 as an Enterprise Zone, and it drew major retailers away from Dudley town centre. The Waterfront Business Park sits next to it, and the enterprise zone, designated as DY5, was later extended to industrial land at Pensnett and Blackbrook with the stated aim of linking advanced manufacturing to digital and professional services. Pensnett Estate, near Kingswinford, is described by its owner as one of the largest secure industrial estates in Europe. Dudley town itself keeps the castle, the zoo and the Black Country Living Museum, which makes it a place visitors search for as well as a place firms operate from.
In practice that gives three different problems under one borough name. A unit on Pensnett Estate or at the Waterfront is usually found by trade and capability rather than by a map. A town-centre shop, café or attraction near the castle is found by Maps and by “near me”. And a business in Halesowen has a B62 or B63 postcode that looks like Birmingham, so its listing needs care. For anyone typing “digital marketing agency dudley”, the useful thing a supplier can do is say which of those it is able to help with, and do so remotely, because our registered address is in Oldbury and not in Dudley.
The point
In practice that gives three different problems under one borough name.
What does a Walsall business have to be found for?
Mostly trade buyers and heritage visitors rather than passing shoppers. The council's own investment prospectus names advanced manufacturing, services, logistics and distribution, a green economy and creative industries, while the town's older identity is leather and saddlery. A firm weighing “seo agency walsall” against “digital marketing agency walsall” is often deciding how to reach one of the following.
- Advanced manufacturing, which the prospectus lists first, with aerospace, automotive, and metals and materials. The buyer is an engineer or purchasing manager searching for a capability, so the pages that matter describe processes and materials in the words a specifier uses, and technical SEO keeps those pages crawlable.
- Head-office suppliers. The same prospectus names A.F. Blakemore, HomeServe, RAC and Poundland among the borough's headquarters, alongside logistics operators. A firm that supplies companies of that size is judged by procurement on its website long before a map listing matters.
- Leather and saddlery. Walsall grew into an international saddle-making centre, and the Walsall Leather Museum, opened in 1988 in a renovated Victorian factory, traces how the trade grew and where it peaked, around 1900. A maker selling bags or tack today has an ecommerce question before a local one.
- Heritage visitors. Willenhall, inside Walsall borough, was a lock-making town, and the Locksmith's House on New Road is managed by the Black Country Living Museum. Attractions like this need accurate opening and booking information on their listings more than they need rankings for a trade term.
- Creative and digital firms. The prospectus names the Guildhall and the Creative Industries Enterprise Centre, where the job is to be found by clients elsewhere, so the audience is not limited to the WS postcodes.
What changes when the customer is in Wolverhampton?
Wolverhampton is a city, with city status conferred in 2001, and the City of Wolverhampton Council covers it, but a Wolverhampton postal address does not stop at the council's boundary. Postcodes with Wolverhampton as the post town include Wombourne, Perton and Codsall, which are in South Staffordshire.
A buyer typing “seo agency in wolverhampton” may therefore be in the city or in a village outside it, and a business that lists itself as being in Wolverhampton should know which it means.
The city's employment geography is unusual. The i54 business park sits on the boundary between South Staffordshire and Wolverhampton, is part of the Black Country Enterprise Zone, and was developed jointly by Staffordshire County Council, the City of Wolverhampton Council and South Staffordshire Council. Its occupiers have included Jaguar Land Rover's engine plant, MOOG Aerospace and Eurofins. A supplier to a site like that is in a business-to-business search from the first click, which is a different job from ranking a high-street shop.
There is also a thing worth saying plainly to anyone considering a “digital marketing agency wolverhampton” search. The University of Wolverhampton Science Park on Glaisher Drive, a joint venture of the university and the council, lists marketing, accountancy and legal providers among its tenants. Agencies are on the doorstep of this city, so we do not compete on being close. We compete on the work, and the questions you would put to any agency before hiring it apply to us too.
The point
The University of Wolverhampton Science Park on Glaisher Drive, a joint venture of the university and the council, lists marketing, accountancy and legal providers among its tenants.
What is different about West Bromwich?
West Bromwich is Sandwell's largest town and its designated strategic town centre, and it is the subject of a council-led masterplan to replace outdated and vacant retail floorspace with new retail, homes and a new town square. A business trading there is on a high street being redrawn, so listings and opening hours need keeping current.
The town grew on ironstone, coal and metal trades, among them springs, guns and nails, and West Bromwich Albion was founded in 1878 by workers from George Salter's Spring Works before moving to The Hawthorns. Sandwell Valley, a country park with an RSPB reserve beside it, lies beyond the town's Dartmouth Park, which matters to visitor-facing businesses. The postcodes are B70 and B71, both Sandwell, but Great Bridge, in DY4 with Tipton as its post town, can be called West Bromwich in conversation and Tipton on an address. If you are searching “seo agency west bromwich” or “digital marketing agency west bromwich”, note that Sandwell Council House is in Oldbury, where we are registered.
The point
A business trading there is on a high street being redrawn, so listings and opening hours need keeping current.
Where do the town, the council and the postcode disagree?
In the Black Country they often disagree, and that matters for local listings. A Willenhall address sits in Walsall borough with a Willenhall post town and a WV code, Halesowen is in Dudley borough with a B postcode, and Darlaston has a Wednesbury post town. Use this as a checklist when you set up or correct a listing.
| Place | Council area | Postcode and post town | What it means for a listing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Willenhall | Walsall (the Portobello area went to Wolverhampton) | WV12, WV13; post town Willenhall | It has a Wolverhampton-style WV code but is mostly governed by Walsall, so check which council area your service area is described against. |
| Darlaston | Walsall | WS10; post town Wednesbury | The post town is a Sandwell town, so the address on a listing may name Wednesbury although the borough is Walsall. |
| Halesowen | Dudley | B62, B63; post town Halesowen | The B prefix reads as Birmingham, so a Halesowen business should state its town and borough clearly. |
| Brierley Hill and Pensnett | Dudley | DY5; post town Brierley Hill | The enterprise zone and Pensnett Estate sit in this district, which is where the borough's industrial searches concentrate. |
| Great Bridge | Sandwell | DY4; post town Tipton | A business there may describe itself as West Bromwich, but the postal address says Tipton. |
| Wombourne, Perton, Codsall | South Staffordshire | WV5, WV6, WV8; post town Wolverhampton | They are outside the four Black Country boroughs but carry a Wolverhampton address, so a business there can be wrongly placed. |
How does work with a Black Country business actually happen?
Remotely, by video call and shared documents, with a visit to or from Oldbury where it helps. Prabhu Solutions is registered at 14 Chester Rise, Oldbury, B68 0SS, West Midlands, in the Sandwell borough of the Black Country. That registered address is the whole of our local presence: we do not claim a local team or a local office.
Our delivery record to date is international rather than UK-based, and we are building a UK client base now. We would rather you looked at live working sites we have built and judged the people behind them through who we are than took a list of local logos on trust. The research, configuration and writing do not depend on proximity, which is why the process is the same for a firm in Dudley as for one in any other town. If you want to talk it through, tell us where your customers actually are and we will say what is worth doing.
The point

What would an SEO or marketing engagement for a Black Country business involve?
It starts with your listing and your site rather than the region: the Google Business Profile, the address on every directory, how the site is crawled, and which towns genuinely deserve a page. Paid or content work follows only where the evidence supports it.
- Listings and profiles checked against your true address and postcode, using the approach in local SEO for businesses with a physical location or a defined service area.
- A technical SEO review and, where you want a written diagnosis first, an SEO audit that ranks findings by likely effect on enquiries.
- Content written for the places and customers you actually serve, through content marketing, and no page that exists only to carry a town name.
- Paid search, where it pays, through paid advertising targeted by postcode district rather than by council boundary.
- A new or rebuilt website where the current one is the limit, designed so service areas are clear to people and to search engines.
- The wider digital marketing service where several channels need to work together, with enquiry tracking so the result can be judged.
When are we the wrong choice?
If you want an agency whose staff can walk into your premises every week, or one with a portfolio of Black Country clients, we are not that, and you should be wary of anyone who claims to be without showing you. If your question is simply what SEO costs, read how SEO pricing is built up before you speak to anyone, ours included.
What The Black Country covers
Not a menu to pick from. Most projects use some of this and ignore the rest, and the scope conversation is mostly about working out which half you actually need.
Listings and map visibility by town
A verified Google Business Profile whose address, postcode and service area match what a customer in that town would expect, rather than the nearest council boundary.
Technical and on-page SEO
Crawl, indexation, structured data and page speed reviewed for the site as a whole, because a town-level listing cannot rescue a site that search engines struggle to read.
Content that is true to the place
Pages that name the estates, districts and customers you genuinely serve, and no page whose only job is to carry a town name.
Search and paid campaigns by postcode
Paid search targeted at the postcode districts where it pays, which in this region do not always follow the borough lines.
Website design and build
A new or rebuilt site where the existing one is the constraint, designed so that service areas and locations are easy to find and easy for a search engine to understand.
Analytics and enquiry tracking
Google Analytics 4 and Search Console set up so that calls, forms and map-listing clicks count as enquiries and the work can be judged afterwards.
Why this is worth doing properly
Town-level, not region-level
Customers search by town, trade and postcode. The work is built around those, with the Black Country label used where a buyer is choosing a supplier.
No doorway pages
We will not build a page for every town with the name swapped. A page earns its place by holding something that can only be said about that place.
Honest about distance
We are registered in Oldbury and work remotely. You are told that before you sign anything, not discovered afterwards.
Written for whoever does the fixing
Findings and changes are described so that your own developer, ours or another agency's can act on them.
What you are handed, and who this suits
Deliverables
- A listings and profile review checked against your real address and postcode
- A site crawl and indexation report with findings ranked by likely effect on enquiries
- A location plan: which towns and districts earn a page and which do not
- New or rewritten service and location pages for places you genuinely serve
- Structured data for your business and service areas
- Enquiry tracking configured in Google Analytics 4 and Search Console
Everything on that list is yours on final payment, in your own company's accounts — the handover is written into the contract, not offered as a favour at the end.
Usually a fit for
- Trade, manufacturing and distribution firms in Dudley, Sandwell, Walsall or Wolverhampton that sell to other businesses
- Shops, clinics and service businesses with a physical address in one of the Black Country's town centres or trading estates
- Businesses that serve several Black Country towns and want to know which of them deserve a page
- Owners who have been sold bulk town pages or citation packages and want a second opinion
Built with
- Google Business Profile
- Google Search Console
- Google Analytics 4
- LocalBusiness schema
- XML sitemaps
- Core Web Vitals
Chosen per project, not per fashion. If your team already runs something else and can maintain it, that usually wins.
Ask what this would involve for youFour gates, and you sign off at each one
Every stage ends with something you can read and approve — which town, which customer, check listings and site, build what is true, measure and adjust. Nothing moves to the next stage until you say so.
- 01
Which town, which customer
We establish where your customers actually are, which postcode districts and council areas that covers, and whether you take work in person, by visit or from a distance.
- 02
Check listings and site
Your Google Business Profile, directory listings, crawl and indexation are reviewed against your real address, so the first fixes are the ones that cost you enquiries now.
- 03
Build what is true
Pages, listings and content are created for the places and services you genuinely cover. Pages with nothing specific to say are left unbuilt and the reason is written down.
- 04
Measure and adjust
Calls, forms and listing actions are tracked, results are read against what was planned, and the plan is changed where the evidence says it should be.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Black Country?
It is a region of the West Midlands, separate from Birmingham, usually taken to mean the four metropolitan boroughs of Dudley, Sandwell, Walsall and the City of Wolverhampton. It has no official boundary and no council of its own. The name comes from the soot of its coal, iron and glass industries.
Is Oldbury in the Black Country?
Oldbury is in the borough of Sandwell, and Sandwell is one of the four boroughs normally counted as the Black Country. Because the region has no official boundary, definitions vary, but Oldbury is within the usual one. Sandwell Council House is in Oldbury, and so is our registered address.
Do you have an office or a team in the Black Country?
No. We have a registered address in Oldbury and nothing else we would call a local presence. The work is research, configuration and writing, done remotely by video call and shared documents, with a visit to or from Oldbury if it helps. Our delivery record to date is international, and we say so.
Do I need an SEO agency in my own town?
Not for the ranking itself. Google says local results depend on relevance, distance and prominence, and those belong to your business and its listing, not to your agency's postcode. What matters is whether the agency can show its working. How to choose an SEO agency lists the questions to ask.
Will a separate page for each Black Country town help me rank?
Only if each page holds something true and specific to that town, such as the estates you serve or the customers you have there. Pages that differ only by the town name are doorway pages, which search engines treat as spam. We would rather build two honest pages than ten near-identical ones.
What does SEO for a Black Country business cost?
We do not publish prices, because the cost depends on how many locations you serve, how contested your trade is, and how much needs repairing first. The drivers are the same wherever you are based, and what an SEO retainer costs per month sets them out without selling you anything.
Can you work with a business outside the Black Country?
Yes. The work does not depend on proximity, so we take on businesses across the UK, and the process is identical for a firm in Birmingham, the wider West Midlands or elsewhere. If you are in the city itself, our Birmingham page covers what is specific to it.
Is a digital marketing agency or an SEO agency the better first call?
If the problem is being found for what you sell, start with SEO. If the problem is that you are found but nobody enquires, or you need several channels working together, a digital marketing agency is the wider brief. How to choose a digital marketing agency helps you decide.
