Digital Marketing and SEO in the West Midlands
The West Midlands is seven council areas and a good many town centres, not one market, and customers search it by town and postcode rather than by county. This page sets out how that changes the work, how we run it with a business here, and which of our pages covers the place you actually trade in.
What is included
- A plain assessment of which centres your customers search from, and which of them you can realistically win
- A review of your Google Business Profile and listings for every site you operate
- Search Console and Analytics checked so that enquiries can be told apart by area
- A page plan that names the location pages worth publishing and the ones to leave out
- A written scope, agreed on a call, with a clear statement of what is not included

What is the West Midlands, and what do people mean by it?
The West Midlands is a metropolitan county made up of seven council areas: Birmingham, Coventry, Dudley, Sandwell, Solihull, Walsall and Wolverhampton. It was created in 1974 and contains three cities, Birmingham, Coventry and Wolverhampton. It is not the same as the much larger West Midlands region, which also takes in Herefordshire, Shropshire, Staffordshire, Warwickshire and Worcestershire.
The shared name causes real confusion in search. Someone typing “west midlands” may mean the county, the region, or the combined authority that runs transport and regeneration across the county under a directly elected mayor. For a business the practical point is that none of these is how customers think about where you are. They think in towns and postcodes, which is what the next section sets out.
The county's boroughs also do not line up with the Black Country, which is usually defined as four of them: Dudley, Sandwell, Walsall and Wolverhampton. Birmingham, Coventry and Solihull sit outside it, and even the edges of the Black Country are argued over locally. The Black Country page deals with those four places on their own facts.
Which council area, which postcode and which name will customers use?
Customers search by town name and postcode, and the two do not always agree with the council map. Oldbury is in Sandwell but has a B postcode, and Tipton is in Sandwell with a DY one. The table sets the seven boroughs against the postcode letters a business in each will actually meet.
| Borough | Status | Postcode letters you will meet | In the Black Country? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Birmingham | City, since 1889 | B, including Sutton Coldfield in B72 to B76 | No |
| Coventry | City | CV | No |
| Dudley | Metropolitan borough | DY, plus Halesowen in B62 and B63 | Yes |
| Sandwell | Metropolitan borough | B for Oldbury, Smethwick and West Bromwich; DY4 for Tipton; WS10 for Wednesbury | Yes |
| Solihull | Metropolitan borough | B90 to B94 | No |
| Walsall | Metropolitan borough | WS | Yes |
| Wolverhampton | City, since 2000 | WV | Yes |
How does local search behave across a region with several centres?
It follows the centres, not the county. Local results are weighted by distance from the searcher or from the place they named, so someone in Walsall and someone in Solihull asking for the same service are shown different businesses. A multi-centre region is several local markets sharing one name.
The consequences are practical. A firm with one site competes in one market, wherever its customers say they are from. A firm with sites in two boroughs competes in two, and each site needs its own profile and its own details. A firm that works a patch crossing borough lines, as many trades do, has to choose the towns it is genuinely strong in rather than naming all of them, because a very wide service area mostly dilutes the signal. How local search ranks businesses is covered in full on the service page.
Compare a single town. There the whole local market is one centre, and the work is mostly the profile, the reviews and a page that backs them up. In a multi-centre region the first job comes earlier and is less glamorous: finding out which centres your customers come from. That is a question for your enquiry records and your analytics before it is a marketing question, and a local SEO agency for the West Midlands should answer it with your data, not with assumptions about the map.
The point
In a multi-centre region the first job comes earlier and is less glamorous: finding out which centres your customers come from.
What should a business with several sites or a mixed patch do?
Give each real site its own profile, details and page, and resist pages for places you do not trade in. The steps below are the order in which problems tend to appear for businesses that straddle borough lines, and none of them calls for a template page for every town.
- Check which postal town your address uses. Sandwell addresses carry the postal towns Oldbury, Smethwick or West Bromwich, and Tipton and Wednesbury are postal towns in their own right. The name on the listing, the website and every directory should be the same one.
- Keep one Google Business Profile for each genuine, staffed location, with its own category choices and its own page on the website, rather than one profile stretched across the county.
- Decide whether your service area is a patch or a list. Three or four towns you really work is defensible. A list of every borough is not, and it is the quickest way to look like every other supplier.
- Segment Search Console and Analytics by place, so you can see where enquiries come from rather than where you hope they come from. The site also has to be crawlable and free of duplicate pages, or the place pages you do publish compete with each other.
- Publish a page for a place only where it can say something specific about it: a branch, a showroom, a service area you work, a local question you can answer properly. Our rule for location pages is the same one applied here.
- Treat neighbouring boroughs as separate decisions. A business in one can be found from the next, but each extension is a choice with its own cost, not a free by-product of the first.
Where should you go for a specific part of the region?
Four place pages sit beneath this one, and each exists because it holds material that could not be written about anywhere else. Pick the one nearest where you trade. If none fits, this page and the service pages are the right place to start.
- Birmingham: the city's own business quarters, how a firm in each is found, and what a search for an SEO agency in the city can and cannot tell you.
- Oldbury: the town in Sandwell where we are registered.
- The Black Country: Dudley, Walsall, Wolverhampton and West Bromwich, each handled on its own facts, with the wider area around them.
- Solihull: a borough with its own B90 to B94 postcodes, and the home of the NEC and Birmingham Airport.
- Coventry has no page of its own. A page would need things that could only be written about Coventry and about work done there, and we have no work there to describe. The service pages cover what we do.
How does work with a West Midlands business actually happen?
Mostly by video call and shared documents, because the work is research, configuration, writing and building, none of which needs a room. Where a meeting in person would help, it can happen at your premises or in Oldbury. We are registered at 14 Chester Rise, Oldbury, B68 0SS, in the West Midlands, and that is the only address we claim.
What we do not claim is a regional team, a branch network or a client list in the region. Our delivery record to date is international rather than UK-based, and we are building a UK client base now, so a West Midlands business would be one of the first rather than one of many. Some owners find that a reason to choose someone else, which is a fair decision. What you can check is the work itself: live sites we have built are open to inspect, and the people who would do yours are named.
The first conversation is usually about which centres your customers come from and what is not working, rather than about services. If that sounds useful, a call to scope it properly is how it starts, and the scope is written down before anything is built or changed.
The point
The first conversation is usually about which centres your customers come from and what is not working, rather than about services.
Which service does a West Midlands business usually need first?
It depends on how customers find you today, not on your postcode. The table pairs four common starting points with the service that normally comes first and what the West Midlands changes about it, so you can judge which conversation is worth having before you contact an SEO agency in the West Midlands, ours included.
| Where you are today | Usually start with | What the West Midlands changes |
|---|---|---|
| Several sites in different boroughs, with thin or uneven reviews | Local SEO for each site | Each site needs its own profile, and postcodes cross borough lines in both directions, so listings must agree on the postal town. |
| A trade or service firm working a patch that crosses council boundaries | A website and local pages built around the towns you really serve | Enquiries will arrive from B, DY, WS and WV postcodes. The patch should be the towns you are strong in, not every borough you could reach. |
| A manufacturer or wholesaler that sells well beyond the region | SEO for national search and a technical review | Your address matters little to the buyer. The region is where you are, not where you sell, so local pages are the wrong first move. |
| Work run from spreadsheets across more than one site | Bespoke software | Branches in different boroughs need one record of customers and jobs. That is a systems problem, and marketing will not fix it. |
What makes a digital marketing agency in the West Midlands affordable rather than just cheap?
Affordable means the cost matches the scope and the scope matches the problem. A cheap quote for digital marketing usually means a template, stock copy and no search work. An affordable one explains what drives the price, so you can remove parts and still know what you are buying. We do not publish prices, but we do say what moves them.
The drivers are the same wherever you are: how many pages and templates, how many sites or locations, whether copy and photography are included, how many other systems the website must talk to, and how contested your search terms are. What an SEO retainer actually costs and what a UK business website costs set out the shape of those drivers. They are our published reasoning, not a quote.
For a small business the affordable route is rarely the cheapest retainer. It is more often one piece of work done properly, such as a profile, a handful of pages and a tracking set-up, followed by running it yourself. When that is the better fit for you, we will say so rather than sell the larger engagement.
The point
For a small business the affordable route is rarely the cheapest retainer.
Do you work with businesses outside the West Midlands?
Yes. The work is remote by default, so it runs the same way for a business in Walsall as for one in Aberdeen, and we also work with businesses across the UK, London included, remotely. Being registered in Oldbury matters if you want to sit down together. It does not decide who we can work with.
What changes outside the region is which of our pages applies. A business that sells nationally needs organic search work at national scale rather than local pages, and a business with a single shop needs the reverse. Either way, the useful first step is the same: say where your customers are, and we will say honestly which of the work on this site is relevant to you.

What Digital Marketing and SEO in the West Midlands covers
Not a menu to pick from. Most projects use some of this and ignore the rest, and the scope conversation is mostly about working out which half you actually need.
SEO for a business that sells from several centres
Site structure and content decided by where customers really come from, not by a list of every town in the county.
Local SEO across more than one site
A Google Business Profile for each genuine location, details that agree everywhere they appear, and reviews asked for properly.
Websites that name the places you really serve
Design and development where a page exists because it has something specific to say about a place, a site or a branch.
Digital marketing planned around the buyer
A recommendation on organic search, paid search and the website, based on how your customers find suppliers rather than on what is fashionable.
Bespoke software for multi-site operations
Custom CRMs, job management, client portals and integrations for businesses whose spreadsheets stopped coping once work spread across sites.
Tracking that separates enquiries by area
Search Console and Analytics configured so you can see which towns the enquiries come from, and compare that with where you hoped they came from.
Why this is worth doing properly
A straight answer on where proximity works against you
If a search is decided by distance you cannot change, you hear that at the start rather than after months of effort.
No padding with near-identical town pages
Pages that exist only to capture a place name put the whole site at risk. We do not build them and will tell you if a previous supplier did.
Remote by default, in person when it helps
The work does not need a room, so it runs by video call and shared documents, with a meeting at your premises or in Oldbury where one is worth having.
Marketing and software from one supplier
When the problem turns out to be an internal system rather than a search ranking, the same people can say so and build the fix.
Costs described by what drives them
We do not publish prices, but we do explain what moves them, so you can remove parts of a scope and still know what you are buying.

Every stage ends with something you can read and approve — map where customers are, choose pages and profiles, build and fix, measure by place. Nothing moves to the next stage until you say so.
- 01
Map where customers are
We start with your enquiries, your sales records and your Search Console data to find which towns and postcodes customers actually come from, and which you only wish they came from.
- 02
Choose pages and profiles
One profile for each genuine site, one page for each place that earns it, and a decision on whether your service area is a patch of towns or a list.
- 03
Build and fix
Profiles, listings, pages, technical fixes and, where it is the real problem, the software behind the business, scoped in writing before work begins.
- 04
Measure by place
Enquiries are tracked against area, so each decision about a page or a profile can be judged on what it produced rather than on a ranking screenshot.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the West Midlands, and is it the same as the Midlands?
No. The West Midlands is a metropolitan county of seven council areas: Birmingham, Coventry, Dudley, Sandwell, Solihull, Walsall and Wolverhampton. The West Midlands region is larger, adding Herefordshire, Shropshire, Staffordshire, Warwickshire and Worcestershire, and the Midlands as a whole is larger again. A search using the name can mean any of the three.
Do you offer local SEO across the whole of the West Midlands?
We do local SEO for businesses anywhere in the region, but not by publishing a page for every town. Each real site gets its own profile, listings that agree and a page with something specific on it, and a patch of towns you genuinely serve is chosen with you. The method is set out on our local SEO service page.
How do I choose a digital marketing agency in the West Midlands?
Ask for live work you can open, the names of the people who would do it, what they refuse to do, and how success is measured in enquiries rather than rankings. Where the agency is registered matters less than those answers. We have written the checks out in how to choose a digital marketing agency.
Can a small West Midlands business afford an SEO agency?
Often, if the scope is matched to the problem. We do not publish prices; the cost depends on the number of pages, locations and integrations, and on how contested your searches are. A one-off piece of work that you then run yourself is sometimes a better fit than a retainer, and we will say so when it is.
Should my business have a page for every town in the West Midlands?
No. A page for each town you do not trade in is what search engines treat as a doorway page, and the penalty can fall on the whole site. Publish a page only where you have a site, a service area you genuinely work, or something specific to say about the place. Everything else belongs on the service page.
Do I need an agency in the same borough as my business?
No. Research, configuration, writing and building do not need anyone in the room, so the agency's borough matters far less than the evidence it can show. What proximity does give you is the option of a meeting in person, and a meeting at your premises or in Oldbury is possible. Everything else runs the same by video call.
Can you build software for a West Midlands business, not only market it?
Yes. Bespoke business software is the larger part of what we build: custom CRMs, job management, client portals and integrations for businesses whose spreadsheets have run out, which is common once work spans several sites. Marketing and software are separate engagements. The software development service explains what a build involves and when off-the-shelf is the better choice.
