SEO Audit Cost in the UK: What the Price Depends On
Four UK guides published or updated between April and July 2026 put a one-off SEO audit anywhere from £500 to £30,000 or more, depending mainly on site size and scope. Small business sites sit near the bottom. These are market readings from firms that sell audits, not quotes.

How much does an SEO audit cost in the UK?
Four UK guides published or updated between April and July 2026 put the entry point for a one-off SEO audit between £500 and £1,500, with ranges widening to £7,500, £15,000 or £30,000 and beyond as sites get larger and the scope deeper. None is a survey, and none is a quote.
| Source and date | What it says | What it ties the figure to |
|---|---|---|
| Whitehat SEO, “SEO Pricing UK: What You Should Actually Pay in 2026”, byline date 13 April 2026 | “SEO audits (£500–£7,500 depending on depth)”, listed under project-based pricing. | Depth of the audit. |
| Kael Tripton, “SEO Audit: What It Is and How to Do One (UK Guide)”, 31 May 2026 | A one-off audit range of “£1,500 for small sites to £30,000+ for enterprise sites”. | Site size. |
| MPG ONE, guide to SEO costs in the UK, last updated July 2026 | £500 to £7,500+ for an audit covering technical analysis, a content audit, competitor analysis and recommendations. | Site size and audit depth. |
| Mecanik Dev, technical SEO audit pricing guide, 28 July 2026 | £1,200 to £2,500 for a simple corporate site under 100 pages; £3,000 to £6,000 for a large ecommerce or custom CMS site; £6,500 to £15,000+ for an enterprise or multi-national portal. The page calls its figures illustrative. | URL count, JavaScript complexity, subdomains and international targets. |
How should you use these figures?
Use them to sense-check a quote, not to set a budget. All four publishers sell SEO, the lower ends differ threefold, and each defines “audit” in its own way. A quote far below the range may be an automated export with a cover page; one far above it needs a scope that explains the difference.
Why do SEO audit prices vary so much?
Because the word “audit” covers very different amounts of work, and price follows hours. A crawler export with a cover page takes little time; a rendered, ranked, evidence-backed review of a large JavaScript site takes days of senior attention. The same label sits on both, so identical-sounding quotes can differ many times over.
The arithmetic is not mysterious. The Mecanik Dev guide of 28 July 2026 cites UK day rates “between £600 and £1,200 depending on seniority” and says its own figures are illustrative and vary by consultant, region and site condition. Multiply a day rate by the days a site genuinely needs and you can see how a quote is put together.
The same guide puts a roughly 60-page static brochure site near £1,500 and a roughly 8,000-URL ecommerce build at £5,250. That shows the mechanism: the price moved with the number of URLs and templates to be diagnosed, not because the advice was a different kind of advice. It is one publisher's worked example, not a rate card.
The point
The same guide puts a roughly 60-page static brochure site near £1,500 and a roughly 8,000-URL ecommerce build at £5,250.
What drives the price of an SEO audit?
Site size, platform behaviour, scope, the data available and who does the work. A few dozen server-rendered pages cost far less to assess than a catalogue generating thousands of URLs, and a report covering content, links and competitors is more work than a crawl of technical faults alone. Ask which of these a quote has assumed.
- Number of URLs and templates. A problem repeated across a catalogue is diagnosed once and verified everywhere, so templates matter more than raw page count. Online shops are the usual cause of a price jump: ecommerce SEO work has to deal with faceted navigation, product variants and repeated templates, as the ecommerce SEO audit checklist sets out.
- Platform and rendering. A standard CMS doing known things is quicker to assess than a bespoke application or a headless build whose behaviour is undocumented. If content only appears after JavaScript runs, the audit has to check what a crawler receives, and that takes longer.
- Scope. MPG ONE lists technical analysis, a content audit, competitor analysis and recommendations inside its range. A quote that covers only technical faults is a narrower job and should cost less, but it should say so.
- Data available. Years of Search Console history and properly tracked enquiries make an audit faster and more reliable than starting with nothing. If tracking is broken, fixing the measurement may come first.
- Locations, languages and markets. A business that depends on map results adds Google Business Profile and location-page checks, which is where local SEO overlaps with an audit. Each extra language or country adds checks of its own.
- How contested the searches are. A crowded market means a closer look at the competitor set and the backlink gap.
- What the report looks like. Findings ranked by likely effect on enquiries, each with evidence and a fix described for a developer, take more work than a list of warnings. They are also the part you can act on.
- Who does the work. A senior person writing the report costs more per day than a junior running a tool, and the difference shows in whether the findings are ranked or merely listed.
How do SEO audit quotes differ in how they are priced?
Most audits are quoted as a fixed fee after scoping, a day rate, or a tiered package by site size. Some are folded into a retainer or offered as a step towards one. Each shifts risk differently: a fixed fee puts it on the supplier, a day rate on you, and a bundled audit on whoever reads the contract less carefully.
| Model | How it works | Suits | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fixed fee after scoping | The supplier looks at the site, agrees what is covered and quotes one price for that scope. | Most businesses. You know the cost and the deliverable before you commit. | A scope that is vague on what is excluded. Extra work is then priced as a variation. |
| Day rate or hourly | You pay for time spent, usually with an estimate of days. | Large or unusual sites where the scope cannot be known in advance. | No ceiling unless you ask for one, and no reason for the supplier to be efficient. |
| Tiered package by page count | Published bands for small, medium and large sites, with a set list of checks in each. | Simple sites with a conventional structure. | Page count is a poor proxy for effort. Templates, platform and rendering matter more. |
| Folded into a retainer | The audit is the first piece of ongoing work and is not priced separately. | Businesses that already know they want ongoing SEO. | Paying for the audit twice, or being locked in before the findings exist. |
| Offered as a step towards other work | The audit is a lead-in to a retainer or a build, and findings can point at services the seller provides. | Nobody in particular. It is a sales route, and sometimes a perfectly honest one. | A report that finds exactly what the seller happens to sell. Ask for evidence you can check for yourself. |
What should you ask for in an SEO audit quote?
Ask what site size the price assumes, which areas are covered, what the report looks like, who writes it, what access they need and what is excluded. A quote that answers those in writing can be compared with another. One that does not is a number with a cover page.
- What size of site does the price assume? If the supplier has not looked at your site, the figure describes a product, not an assessment.
- Which areas are covered? Crawl and indexation, rendering, internal links, Core Web Vitals, structured data, content gaps, backlinks, competitors and analytics are the usual set, and what a thorough audit includes sets them out item by item.
- What does the report look like? Ask for a sample, redacted if need be. Findings should be ranked, with the affected URLs and a fix written for a developer.
- Who writes it, and will they explain it? A named person and a conversation are worth more than a PDF. The people behind Prabhu Solutions are named for exactly that reason.
- What access is needed? Read-only access to Search Console and analytics is enough to produce an audit. Be wary of a request for write access to your site or accounts.
- What is excluded? Fixes, content production, link building and monitoring are normally separate. Get the exclusions in writing.
- Is VAT included? Some published figures state that they exclude it and others say nothing, so the same number can mean different things.
- What happens afterwards? A walk-through with your team, and a report you can hand to any developer, are the difference between a document and a plan. Our own SEO audit service is written to that standard.
What are the red flags in cheap and expensive audit quotes?
In a cheap quote, the flags are an automated export dressed as analysis, one price for every site and a promised traffic uplift. In an expensive one, they are a high figure with no scope, a method nobody will explain and an audit that is useless without the next contract.
| What you see | Why it is a flag | What to ask |
|---|---|---|
| A very low price, delivered quickly, with hundreds of warnings at equal weight | That is usually a crawler export with a cover page. It hands the judgement back to you. | Which findings matter most, and can you show me one on my live site? |
| The same price for every site, quoted before anyone has looked at yours | Effort follows URLs, templates and platform. A fixed price regardless of size describes a product. | What size and scope does this price assume, in writing? |
| A forecast of traffic or revenue from the audit | An audit is a diagnosis. Rankings depend on fixes being made, on competitors and on search engines nobody controls. | What does this make possible, and what is outside anyone's control? |
| A request for write access to your site or accounts to produce a report | Findings can be produced from read-only access. Write access is not needed to diagnose. | Why is this access needed, and can it be read-only? |
| A high price with no breakdown of scope or deliverables | You cannot tell whether you are paying for depth or for overhead. | What exactly is covered, who does it, and what do I receive? |
| A “proprietary” scoring method that is never explained | A score you cannot interrogate is a number, not evidence. | How is each finding rated, and what evidence sits behind it? |
| An audit that only makes sense if you sign the next contract | The audit should stand alone. If it cannot be handed to another developer, it is a sales document. | Can I give this report to my own developers or another agency? |
What is not included in the price of an SEO audit?
Usually the fixes. An audit says what is wrong and in what order to deal with it; making the changes is separate work, as are content, link building and monitoring. The Mecanik Dev guide of 28 July 2026 says implementation “typically consumes 1.5 to 2 times the audit fee in engineering hours”, so budget for it.
That ratio is one publisher's estimate, and your own will depend on the site, but the point stands: an audit that is never implemented is a PDF you paid for. Where the findings go deep on a large or JavaScript-heavy site, technical SEO work is the usual follow-on, scoped once the findings exist rather than guessed in advance.
Be careful where the same supplier writes the audit and sells the fixes. It can work well, because the person who found the problem understands it. It can also drift towards findings that need the seller's services. The protection is the same either way: ranked findings, evidence you can check, and a report you could hand to anyone. How to choose an SEO agency covers the wider questions.
The point
Be careful where the same supplier writes the audit and sells the fixes.
How does an audit price compare with a monthly SEO retainer?
An audit is a one-off diagnosis and a retainer is ongoing work, so they are not substitutes. An audit makes sense before committing to a retainer, because it shows what has to be done first. Some retainers include an initial audit; if yours does, do not pay for a second one.
For retainers, Whito, an independent UK research publisher, reported on 8 October 2026 a median of £799 a month across 45 prices published by 16 UK providers in June 2026. That is a reading of what providers advertise, not a measure of what businesses pay. The full picture is in what SEO costs per month in the UK.
The two prices answer different questions. The audit says what needs fixing and in what order; the retainer pays for people to do it over time. If you are weighing both, the wider SEO service shows how the audit feeds the work that follows, and the order matters more than either price.
The point
The audit says what needs fixing and in what order; the retainer pays for people to do it over time.
When is an SEO audit not worth buying?
When the problem is not in the site, when the site is about to change, or when nobody can act on the findings. An audit examines what exists. It is the wrong purchase for a site mid-rebuild, a business losing enquiries after the click, or a team with no capacity to make the fixes.
| Your situation | Why the audit is premature | Where the money is better spent |
|---|---|---|
| The site is about to be rebuilt or moved to a new platform or domain | Findings about the old site are overwritten by the new one, and the real risk is losing what already ranks. | Planning the move so rankings survive it, which is the work of SEO for a website migration. |
| Traffic is steady but enquiries are not | The problem is after the click, and an audit of search visibility will not find it. | Looking at the pages visitors land on, through conversion optimisation. |
| You need enquiries this month | An audit adds none of its own. Its value is in the fixes that follow, and search builds over time. | Weighing the routes honestly in SEO or PPC before committing to either. |
| You already hold an audit that was never implemented | A second audit adds to the pile without changing what gets done. | Having an independent adviser challenge the priorities in it, which is what SEO consultancy is for. |
| You are not sure you need SEO help at all | An audit assumes the answer is yes before the question has been asked. | Settling whether you need an SEO agency first. |
| The site has not launched yet | There is nothing to crawl and no search history to read. | Writing search requirements into the build brief, then auditing the finished site. |
| Nobody can make the fixes | Without a developer or a budget for implementation, the report will sit unread. | Securing the capacity to implement before commissioning a diagnosis. |
How does Prabhu Solutions quote for an SEO audit?
We scope it after looking at the site, and we publish no prices. What moves our quote is what moves anyone's: the number of URLs and templates, the platform, how much is in scope and what data exists. The report is written so you can hand it to any developer, ours or not.
Our SEO audit service is a written diagnosis with findings ranked by likely effect on enquiries, the evidence for each, a statement of what was left alone and what could not be checked. It does not promise rankings, and it is not an automated export. If a number you have been given looks wrong in either direction, the questions above are how to find out why.
If you want a second opinion on a quote you already hold, or want to know whether an audit is the right first step for your site, tell us about the site and we will say honestly whether an audit, a fix or nothing at all is the sensible next spend. Our delivery record to date is international rather than UK-based, and we say so plainly.
The point
Our delivery record to date is international rather than UK-based, and we say so plainly.
Questions people ask about this
How much does an SEO audit cost in the UK?
Published UK guides from 2026 give ranges that start at about £500 to £1,500 and rise to £7,500, £15,000 or £30,000 and beyond with site size and depth. They are market readings from sellers, not quotes. The useful comparison is between quotes for the same written scope, not between headline figures.
What is the average price of an SEO audit?
There is no reliable average. The guides we read give ranges rather than a measured mean, and they define an audit differently. A small brochure site and a large online shop are different jobs. Ask each supplier what size and scope their price assumes, then compare like with like.
Is a cheap SEO audit worth paying for?
Sometimes, on a small site, if it is a person's judgement applied to your own data. Often a very cheap audit is an automated crawler export with a cover page. Test it by asking the supplier to show you one finding on your live site, with evidence you can reproduce yourself.
Does the audit price include fixing the problems?
Normally not. The fee buys the diagnosis and a written report; implementation is separate work, scoped once the findings exist. One 2026 UK guide estimates fixes take 1.5 to 2 times the audit fee in engineering hours, so budget for them before you buy.
Should an SEO audit quote include VAT?
Ask, and get the answer in writing. Some published figures state that they exclude VAT and others say nothing, so the same number can mean different things. Also confirm what scope it assumes, whether a walk-through is included, and whether any tool or access costs sit outside the fee.
Can I have one company audit my site and another do the fixes?
Yes, and it works well if the report is specific enough. Insist that findings come with affected URLs, evidence and fixes written for a developer, so any competent team can act. That separation also protects you from findings shaped around what the auditor happens to sell.
Do I need an audit or an SEO consultant?
An audit answers what is wrong and in what order. A consultant helps decide what to do about it and who should do it. If you have developers and need a diagnosis, buy the audit. If you lack the judgement to act on one, an SEO consultant may be the better first purchase.
Does the price include a walk-through of the report?
Not always. Some quotes deliver a PDF and stop. Ask whether a conversation with the author is included, because findings rarely land from a document alone. A walk-through lets your team challenge the order of fixes, which is where most audits are won or lost.
