WordPress or a Custom Build? How to Decide
For most business websites, WordPress is the right answer. A custom build on a modern framework wins on speed, security and control, and typically costs 30 to 60% more for equivalent scope, plus more to change afterwards. The decision turns on what the site has to do, not on which technology is fashionable.

How do WordPress and a custom build compare?
WordPress costs less to build and lets your own team edit; a custom build is faster by default and has a smaller attack surface, at roughly 30 to 60% more for equivalent scope. Everything else follows from those two facts. Both routes sit inside the same website development work — only the foundation changes.
| Factor | WordPress | Custom build |
|---|---|---|
| Build cost | Lower | 30–60% higher for equivalent scope |
| Editing | Excellent — your team can genuinely use it | Depends entirely on what is built |
| Speed | Good if built well, poor if plugin-heavy | Very good by default |
| Security | Needs active maintenance | Smaller attack surface, still needs patching |
| Finding another developer | Very easy | Depends on the technology chosen |
| Ongoing cost | Updates and plugin maintenance | Dependency updates, usually less frequent |
| Flexibility | Enormous, via plugins | Unlimited, via development |
When should you choose WordPress?
Choose WordPress when you want your own team editing content without calling anyone, when the site is content-led, when you need a large ecosystem of ready-made functionality, when budget matters, and when you want the widest possible pool of future developers to choose from.
- You want your team editing content without calling anyone. This is the single strongest argument and it is decisive for most businesses.
- The site is content-led — services, blog, case studies, resources.
- You need a large ecosystem — forms, bookings, memberships and e-commerce, where the platform choice deserves its own comparison, all available.
- Budget matters. You get more site for the money, and what a website costs in the UK sets out what each band buys.
- You want the widest possible pool of future developers. WordPress runs a substantial share of the web; you will never struggle to find someone.
When should you choose a custom build?
Choose a custom build when the site is really an application, when performance is a competitive factor rather than a nice-to-have, when integration requirements would mean fighting the platform, when plugin overhead genuinely costs you at scale, or when security rules demand a smaller attack surface.
- The site is really an application — logins, dashboards, complex data, per-user content. At that point you are commissioning a web application rather than a website.
- Performance is a competitive factor, not just a nice-to-have.
- You have unusual integration requirements that would mean fighting the platform. This is the point where a website shades into a bespoke business system.
- You are at a scale where plugin overhead genuinely costs you.
- Security requirements are strict enough that a smaller attack surface matters.
Is WordPress really slow and insecure?
No. WordPress is slow when it is built badly — twenty plugins, a page builder loading everything on every page, uncompressed images. Built properly, with a custom theme and only the plugins that earn their place, it is fast.
It is insecure when it is unmaintained. The vulnerabilities that get exploited are almost always in outdated plugins, found by automated scanners. A maintained WordPress site is not a soft target, and keeping it that way is exactly what an ongoing website maintenance plan does.
Both criticisms are really criticisms of how it is usually built, and both are fixable.
What do we recommend for most business websites?
For roughly eight out of ten business websites, a custom WordPress theme. Not a purchased theme, not a page builder — a theme built for your design, with a clean editing experience, and only the plugins that do real work.
That gets you the editing experience and the ecosystem of WordPress with most of the performance of a custom build, at a cost between the two.
The point
Not a purchased theme, not a page builder — a theme built for your design, with a clean editing experience, and only the plugins that do real work.
Questions people ask about this
Is WordPress good for SEO?
Neither platform is inherently better. What matters is whether pages are server-rendered, fast, properly structured and correctly marked up. WordPress does all of that well when it is built properly. Modern JavaScript frameworks can be excellent or catastrophic depending on the rendering configuration — we have seen sites where every page served an empty shell to crawlers.
Can I move from WordPress to a custom build later?
Yes, and content migration is usually straightforward. The bigger job is mapping URLs and redirects so you do not lose rankings.
Are page builders like Elementor a problem?
They make editing easier and they add weight. For a small site the trade-off is often fine. For a site that needs to be fast, a custom theme is better. Be aware that page builders create lock-in — content built in one is difficult to move out.
How much more does a custom build cost?
Roughly 30 to 60% more for equivalent scope, plus higher ongoing development costs for changes that a content editor could have made themselves in WordPress.
